Overview
Variegated African violets are perennial herbs with rosette-forming foliage growing 6-8 inches (15-20 cm) tall and 8-12 inches (20-30 cm) wide. Leaves are 2-4 inches (5-10 cm) long, ovate to broadly ovate, with cream, white, or pink variegation appearing as marginal bands, sectoral patches, or mottled patterns across the dark green leaf surface. Variegation patterns include Tommie Lou (white-edged leaves), mosaic (random light patches), and crown variegation (lighter centers on new growth). Leaves are densely covered with short hairs and held on short, fleshy petioles 1-2 inches (2.5-5 cm) long. Flowers appear in clusters of 3-10 on stems rising 2-4 inches (5-10 cm) above the foliage; individual blooms measure 0.75-1.5 inches (2-4 cm) across with five petals in shades of violet, blue, pink, white, or bicolor. Variegated cultivars produce 30-50 percent fewer flowers than solid-green S. ionantha due to reduced chlorophyll. Variegation intensity fluctuates with temperature; cool nights below 65°F (18°C) increase white pigmentation while warm conditions favor green tissue reversion. Plants live 3-7 years before centers become woody and bloom production declines, requiring restart from leaf cuttings.
Native Range
Native to cloud forests of the Eastern Arc Mountains in Tanzania and Kenya at elevations of 1,000-6,500 feet (300-2,000 m), where S. ionantha grows on shaded rock outcrops with constant humidity. Variegated forms are cultivated selections that do not occur in wild populations.Suggested Uses
Grown indoors as a windowsill or table specimen in 4-6 inch (10-15 cm) pots with bottom drainage. Used in terrariums and humidity-controlled display cases where ambient humidity stays above 50 percent. Suited to north or east-facing windows in temperate latitudes; supplemental fluorescent or LED lighting at 6-12 inches (15-30 cm) above the canopy supports flowering in dim interiors. How to Identify

Bloom Information
Flowers year-round under consistent indoor conditions of 65-75°F (18-24°C) and 12-14 hours of bright indirect light. Individual flowers last 2-3 weeks; a single flowering cycle produces blooms for 6-8 weeks before a 4-6 week rest. Flowering decreases or stops below 60°F (15°C) or above 85°F (29°C). Variegated cultivars bloom 30-50 percent less than solid-green forms.Detailed Descriptions

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Water from below by setting pots in tepid water 70-75°F (21-24°C) for 20-30 minutes once the top 0.5 inch (1.3 cm) of soil dries; cold water on leaves causes ring spot damage. Maintain temperatures of 65-75°F (18-24°C) day and 60-65°F (15-18°C) night, with bright indirect light at 1,000-2,000 foot-candles for 12-14 hours daily; direct sun causes leaf scorch and bleaches variegation. Fertilize with balanced 20-20-20 at quarter strength every two weeks during active growth. Repot annually into fresh African violet mix; plants outgrow 4-inch (10 cm) pots within 12-18 months. Crown rot develops in waterlogged soil; mealybugs and cyclamen mites colonize hairy leaves in low humidity below 40 percent.Pruning
Remove spent flower stems at the base by pinching with fingers or cutting flush with the petiole crown. Remove yellowing or damaged outer leaves monthly to maintain rosette symmetry; healthy plants carry 12-16 leaves at any time. Suckers forming at the base of the rosette can be detached to maintain a single crown; multiple crowns reduce flowering. Refresh leggy or woody plants every 3-4 years by rooting healthy leaf cuttings in moist vermiculite.Maintenance Level
