Pyrorchis nigricans
red beaks
Overview
Pyrorchis nigricans, known as red beaks, is a colony-forming terrestrial orchid in the family Orchidaceae found across southern Australia. Each plant grows from an underground tuber and produces a single fleshy, heart-shaped leaf that lies flat against the ground, 1.5-4 inches (4-10 cm) long, dark green and often red-tinged beneath. Plants spread by underground droppers to form dense patches of leaves, but flowering is sporadic and largely triggered by summer bushfire. When it flowers in spring, a stout stem 4-10 inches (10-25 cm) tall carries several tubular white to pink flowers heavily veined and beaked with deep red, the source of the common name. The whole plant turns black when bruised or dried, which gives the species its name nigricans. It grows in heath, woodland, and open forest on sandy, loamy, and clay soils. Like other terrestrial orchids it relies on soil fungi and resists transplanting. In most years a colony shows only leaves and no flowers.
Native Range
Pyrorchis nigricans is native to southern Australia, occurring in Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania, and southern New South Wales. It grows in heath, mallee, woodland, and open forest on a range of sandy to clay soils, often in extensive colonies.Suggested Uses
Grown by terrestrial orchid specialists and in bushland conservation on undisturbed native soils. Suited to wildflower and geophyte collections that follow a wet-winter, dry-summer rhythm. Not used in conventional garden beds because of its reliance on soil fungi and fire cues. How to Identify

Bloom Information
Flowering occurs in spring, mainly September to November, but only in a minority of years, with mass flowering following summer bushfire. The beaked white-and-red flowers are clustered on a short stem. In years without fire, colonies produce leaves alone.

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Grows in full sun to light shade on freely draining sandy, loamy, or clay soils that are moist through winter and dry in summer. The plant grows actively in the cool, wet months and rests as a dormant tuber through the dry season, needing no summer water. Establishment depends on native soil fungi, so the orchid resists transplanting and declines in disturbed or fertilised ground. Sharp drainage during dormancy prevents tuber rot. Flowering is hard to induce in cultivation without the chemical cues of fire or smoke, so most patches remain leaf-only. Deep sandy pots that dry off in summer suit container culture.Pruning
No pruning is needed, as the leaf and any flower stem die back to the tuber each summer. Spent flower stems can be cut once seed has shed. Withered leaves separate cleanly as the colony enters dormancy.Pruning Schedule
