Overview
Platystemon californicus is a low, hairy annual in the poppy family (Papaveraceae), growing 4-12 inches (10-30 cm) tall in a loose, spreading clump. The narrow, soft-hairy leaves are 0.4-3 inches (1-8 cm) long, mostly clustered toward the base of the branching stems. Each slender stalk carries a single bowl-shaped flower 0.5-1 inch (1.5-2.5 cm) across with six overlapping petals that are cream to pale yellow, often with a deeper yellow or orange tip. Many flattened stamens fill the center. The flowers open in spring and are followed by fruits that break into beadlike, one-seeded segments at maturity. It germinates with winter and spring rains, blooms quickly, and dies as the soil dries in early summer. It grows on open grassland, hillsides, sandy flats, and burned or disturbed ground, often in large seasonal stands. One limitation is its brief annual cycle: the display lasts a few weeks in spring before the plants set seed and disappear for the year.
Native Range
Platystemon californicus is native to the western United States and northwestern Mexico, from Oregon and California east to Utah and Arizona and south into Baja California. It grows in open grassland, sandy flats, and disturbed or recently burned ground.Suggested Uses
Platystemon californicus is used in wildflower meadows, native and pollinator plantings, and seasonal containers and is often sown in spring-flowering seed mixes. It suits open, sunny ground and naturalized banks. The short annual season makes it a spring filler among longer-lived plants. How to Identify

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Platystemon californicus grows in full sun on sandy, gravelly, or loamy soils with good drainage and tolerates poor, disturbed ground. It germinates with cool-season rains and needs spring moisture but no summer water, dying naturally as the soil dries. Rich or wet soil and shade reduce flowering. As an annual it relies on self-sown seed to return each year. It carries few pests. Seed sown in fall on bare soil establishes most readily.Pruning
No pruning is needed for this annual. Seed heads left in place allow self-sowing for the following spring. Spent plants can be cleared once they dry and shed seed.Container Growing
