Pandorea jasminoides
bower plant
Eastern Australia (Queensland and New South Wales)
Overview
Pandorea jasminoides is an evergreen woody climber growing 15-25 feet (4.5-8 m) long, twining and scrambling through supports without tendrils or aerial roots. The leaves are pinnate, 4-8 inches (10-20 cm) long, divided into five to nine glossy, dark green leaflets with pointed tips. Trumpet-shaped flowers 1.5-2.5 inches (4-6 cm) long and about 2 inches (5 cm) across open in loose clusters, white to pale pink with a deep pink to crimson throat, the five lobes flaring at the mouth. Flowering runs from spring into summer, with scattered flowers at other times in mild climates. Flat woody capsules 2-3 inches (5-8 cm) long follow and split to release winged seeds. The climber grows quickly in warm conditions and forms a dense, leafy cover over fences, arbors, and trellises. It grows along forest margins and watercourses in eastern Australia and tolerates light frost once established, with foliage damaged below 28 F (-2 C). Without support it spreads as a scrambling groundcover, and the twining stems can crowd nearby shrubs.
Native Range
Native to eastern Australia, in Queensland and New South Wales. It grows along rainforest margins, riverbanks, and in open forest, climbing over shrubs and trees toward the light.Suggested Uses
Grown to cover fences, pergolas, arbors, and trellises in warm, frost-free to light-frost gardens. It is trained on walls for evergreen screening and flowers. Without support it spreads as a scrambling groundcover on banks. How to Identify

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Grow Pandorea jasminoides in full sun to part shade in moist, well-drained soil with a pH of 5.5-7.0. It flowers most freely in full sun and on a sturdy support such as a fence, trellis, or arbor. Water regularly through the first two seasons and during dry spells; established plants tolerate short droughts. It withstands light frost to about 28 F (-2 C), with foliage burned by harder cold. A trim after the main flowering flush keeps the growth dense and within bounds.Pruning
Prune after the main flowering flush to control size and remove tangled or dead stems. Cutting back long shoots encourages branching and denser cover on a support. The climber tolerates hard renewal pruning into older wood, which resprouts in the growing season.Pruning Schedule
