Overview

Nekemias spp. is a genus of woody, deciduous climbing vines in the grape family (Vitaceae), segregated from Ampelopsis spp. and holding about a dozen species across eastern Asia and the Americas. Plants climb by branched tendrils to 6-10 m (20-33 ft) where support allows, with slender stems that turn woody at the base and sprawl where no support is present. The alternate leaves are compound, once or twice divided into toothed leaflets, mid- to deep green, turning yellow before they drop in autumn. Small greenish flowers in flat-topped clusters open opposite the leaves through summer; they are individually inconspicuous but rich in nectar and draw many bees and wasps. Rounded berries 6-10 mm (0.2-0.4 in) follow, ripening through shades of yellow, pink, and blue to near-black, often with several colours present at once in one cluster. N. arborea grows across the south-eastern United States, N. aconitifolia in eastern Asia, and N. grossedentata is brewed as a herbal tea in southern China. Plants grow fast and can swamp small shrubs, so they need room or regular cutting back.

Native Range

Nekemias spp. is native to warm-temperate and subtropical parts of eastern Asia and the Americas. N. arborea ranges through the south-eastern United States and into Mexico and the Caribbean, while several species, including N. aconitifolia and N. grossedentata, occur in China and neighbouring countries. Plants grow along woodland edges, streambanks, and fencerows.

Suggested Uses

Grown on fences, pergolas, and trellises for fast screening and autumn fruit colour, spaced 1.8-3 m (6-10 ft) apart. The summer flowers are a nectar source for bees and wasps, and birds take the ripe berries.

How to Identify

Look for a woody climber with branched tendrils and compound leaves divided into toothed leaflets, opening opposite small greenish flower clusters. The ripe berries are the clearest marker, ripening unevenly so that yellow, pink, blue, and black fruit appear together in one cluster. Stems are slightly ridged with a thin pith, separating Nekemias spp. from true grapes.

Nekemias spp. grows in full sun to part shade on most moist, free-draining soils across a pH range of about 5.5 to 7.5. It tolerates heat and short dry spells once established but grows fastest with steady moisture. Hardiness spans roughly USDA zones 5 to 9, depending on species. Vines climb by tendrils and need a fence, trellis, or sturdy host for vertical growth. Without support or cutting back, the fast growth can overwhelm nearby shrubs. Plants need little feeding and resprout readily after hard pruning.

Pruning

Cut back in late winter while dormant to control size and direct growth onto the support. Stems can be shortened hard, since the genus resprouts from old wood. Growth straying into neighbouring plants is removed during the growing season.
