Muehlenbeckia adpressa
climbing lignum
Overview
Muehlenbeckia adpressa is a vigorous, twining, semi-woody climber or scrambling groundcover with wiry reddish-brown stems that reach 6-20 feet (2-6 m) long, climbing over supports or spreading across the ground. The alternate leaves are broadly oval to heart-shaped, 0.4-2 inches (1-5 cm) long, mid-green and slightly leathery, sometimes tinged red in exposed sites. Small greenish-cream flowers, individually inconspicuous, open in short clusters along the stems mainly in spring and summer. These are followed by fleshy, translucent white to pinkish fruit formed from the swollen flower parts, each enclosing a single black nut; the fruit is edible and draws birds. The species grows on coastal dunes, in scrub, and along the edges of forest across southeastern Australia and Tasmania, twining over shrubs and fences. It tolerates salt, wind, and sandy soil but grows quickly and can smother low plants if left unchecked. Hard cutting back keeps it within bounds, as it reshoots readily from the base.
Native Range
Muehlenbeckia adpressa is native to southern and southeastern Australia, including coastal New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia, and Western Australia. It grows on coastal dunes, in scrub, and at forest margins on sandy and rocky soils.Suggested Uses
Planted to cover fences, banks, and arbors in coastal and native gardens, and as a scrambling groundcover on dunes. Used for erosion control and bird habitat on sandy ground. Spaced 3-5 feet (0.9-1.5 m) apart, with support for climbing. How to Identify

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Muehlenbeckia adpressa grows in full sun to part shade in most well-drained soils, including sand, and tolerates salt spray and coastal wind. Established plants are drought-tolerant and need little water, though they grow faster with some moisture. Cold hardiness covers moderate frost, roughly USDA zones 8-10. Growth is fast and twining, so a support or regular cutting back keeps the plant in its allotted space. It reshoots strongly from the base, which makes hard renewal pruning straightforward.Pruning
Hard cutting back in late winter controls size and clears tangled old stems before new growth. The plant reshoots readily from the base after such pruning. Stray stems can be trimmed through the year to keep it off neighboring plants.Pruning Schedule
