Laxmannia spp.
wire lily
Overview
Laxmannia spp. is a genus of about 13 small perennial herbs in the family Asparagaceae, endemic to Australia and known as wire lilies. Plants form low tufts or rosettes of narrow, grass-like to needle-shaped leaves, often only 5-30 cm (2-12 in) tall, and spread by short rhizomes in some species to make loose mats. Slender wiry flowering stems rise above the foliage and carry compact terminal heads of small star-shaped flowers, each with six tepals in white, cream, or pink, frequently with a darker base. Flowering is mainly in spring and early summer. The genus grows in heathland, open eucalypt woodland, granite outcrops, and sandy or gravelly soils across southern Australia, with a concentration of species in the south-west. Many species occupy seasonally dry sites and survive summer drought as compact rootstocks. The small stature and narrow foliage make individual plants easy to overlook outside the flowering period. Several species regenerate from seed or rootstock after fire, a common adaptation among plants of Australian heath and woodland communities.
Native Range
Laxmannia spp. is endemic to Australia, occurring across the southern half of the continent in all mainland states, with the greatest number of species in south-western Western Australia. Plants grow on sandy and gravelly soils in heath, woodland, and granite-outcrop communities.Suggested Uses
Grown in native gardens, rockeries, and container plantings where the small tufts and spring flower heads can be seen at close range. Suited to sandy, well-drained sites, spaced 15-30 cm (6-12 in) apart. How to Identify

Bloom Information
Flowering occurs mainly in spring and early summer, roughly September to December in the southern hemisphere, with timing varying by species and rainfall. The clustered white to pink flowers open over several weeks. Dry capsules follow, splitting to release seed.

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Plants grow in full sun to light shade and require well-drained sandy or gravelly soil. Established plants tolerate seasonal drought and need little water through dry summers. Low-phosphorus conditions suit them, as with many Australian natives, so high-phosphorus fertilizers are replaced with low-phosphorus blends. Frost tolerance varies, with most species suited to mild, frost-free or light-frost climates. Sharp drainage and unwatered summer dormancy reduce the risk of rot.Pruning
Little pruning is required beyond removing spent flowering stems after seed set. Old foliage can be tidied as new growth appears. Plants left undisturbed form denser tufts over time.Container Growing
