Overview
Hookeria lucens is a pale, glossy moss that forms low, spreading patches of flattened shoots 1-3 inches (2.5-8 cm) long on damp, shaded ground. Its translucent leaves are large for a moss, broadly oval and overlapping in a flat plane, and their cells are big enough to be seen with a hand lens as a network of clear panes that gives the plant a watery sheen. The shoots creep over the surface and anchor by slender rhizoids rather than true roots. Spore capsules are egg-shaped and nodding, carried on short red stalks 0.2-0.4 inch (5-10 mm) tall, ripening through autumn and winter. It grows on wet soil, stream banks, shaded rocks, and rotting wood in humid woodland and ravines across western and central Europe, with scattered occurrences in Asia and North America. The moss favours deep shade and constant moisture, and it shrivels where the air dries out. Its large, flat, pale leaves and glassy cell network separate it from almost all other mosses of the same wet, shaded habitats, where most species have small, opaque leaves.
Native Range
Native to western and central Europe, with scattered records in Asia, North America, and the southern hemisphere. It grows in humid woodland, on shaded stream banks, wet rocks, and rotting wood.Suggested Uses
Grown in shaded terraria, on damp woodland banks, and in cool, humid corners of bog and stream-side gardens. It is used as a ground-covering moss where the air stays moist. It also colonises rotting logs and shaded stonework in such settings. How to Identify

Care Guide
Hookeria lucens grows on constantly damp, shaded soil, rotting wood, and rock in humid, sheltered places. It needs high humidity, deep shade, and a steady supply of moisture, and it shrivels quickly if the surrounding air dries. The moss tolerates acid to neutral conditions, roughly pH 4.5 to 6.5, and low nutrient levels. It is grown in shaded bog gardens, terraria, and on damp woodland soil where conditions stay cool and moist. It spreads by creeping shoots and by fragments that root where they settle. Drainage, disturbance, and exposure to sun cause it to fade.Container Growing
