Overview
Gynochthodes is a genus of roughly 90 to 100 species of evergreen climbers, scrambling shrubs, and occasional small trees in the coffee family (Rubiaceae), spread across tropical Africa, Asia, Australia, and the Pacific. Many species were formerly placed in Morinda. Climbing species twine or scramble to 10–30 ft (3–9 m) through surrounding vegetation, with opposite, glossy, oval leaves 1.5–6 in (4–15 cm) long and small stipules between the leaf bases. Small tubular white flowers are grouped into tight rounded heads, and, as in the wider family, the flowers of a head fuse at the base so that their developing fruits merge into a single fleshy compound fruit. These fruits ripen yellow, orange, or black and are eaten and dispersed by birds and mammals. Most species grow in rainforest, monsoon forest, and thickets, climbing toward the light. It is grown mainly in tropical native, habitat, and rainforest plantings.

Bloom Information
Flowering occurs through the warm and wet months, with timing varying across the genus wide range. Small white flowers are packed into rounded heads at the stem tips and leaf axils. The fused flowers develop into compound fruits that ripen over the following months.
