Overview
Gymnocalycium mihanovichii is the moon cactus — a grafted combination of two separate cactus species, growing 4–6 inches (10–15 cm) total height. The colorful spherical top (red, orange, yellow, or pink) is a chlorophyll-deficient mutant of G. mihanovichii that cannot photosynthesize independently. The green columnar base is a different species, typically Hylocereus undatus (dragon fruit cactus), which performs all photosynthesis for both organisms. The graft junction between the two species is inherently temporary — it typically fails within 1–5 years, after which the colorful top dies because it cannot sustain itself. The green rootstock may continue growing independently after the top is removed. This finite lifespan is a structural limitation of the graft, not a care failure. The chlorophyll-free top is sensitive to direct intense sun (sunburn risk on the unpigmented tissue); bright indirect light is safer. Non-toxic to cats and dogs. Well-draining cactus soil. Water sparingly — every 2–3 weeks during growing season. Native to Paraguay and Argentina (the species). The colorful mutant forms do not occur in the wild; they are selected and propagated by grafting.
Native Range
Gymnocalycium mihanovichii is native to Paraguay and Argentina.Suggested Uses
Grown in containers of 0.25–0.5 gallon (1–2 liters) on windowsills and desks in bright indirect light. Avoid direct intense sun (sunburn on the colorful top). Non-toxic — safe for households with pets. The finite graft lifespan (1–5 years) means it is not a long-term plant. How to Identify

Bloom Information
Small pink flowers are occasionally produced from the colorful top in spring. Flowering is uncommon in cultivation. The colorful grafted form is the year-round display.Detailed Descriptions

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Bright indirect light — avoid direct intense sun (sunburn risk on the chlorophyll-free top). Water sparingly, every 2–3 weeks during growing season. Well-draining cactus mix. The graft has a finite lifespan of 1–5 years. Non-toxic to cats and dogs.Pruning
No pruning required. If the colorful top dies or the graft fails, remove it and allow the green rootstock to continue growing independently.Maintenance Level
