Overview
Gymnadenia spp. is a genus of about 10 to 20 species of terrestrial orchids native to Europe and temperate Asia, growing from fleshy, finger-like tubers. Plants form a basal cluster of narrow, strap-shaped leaves and send up an erect flowering stem 8–24 in (20–60 cm) tall. The stem ends in a dense, cylindrical spike packed with many small flowers, each 0.2–0.4 in (5–10 mm) across, in shades of pink, mauve, purple, and occasionally white or deep red, every flower carrying a long slender spur behind the lip. Most species are strongly and sweetly scented, giving rise to the common name fragrant orchid, and are pollinated by day-flying and night-flying moths and butterflies drawn to the spurs of nectar. Flowering occurs in early to midsummer. Plants grow in unimproved grassland, meadows, fens, and open hillsides, often on lime-rich soils, and depend on symbiotic soil fungi. Many populations have declined sharply with the loss of traditional hay meadows and grazing.

Bloom Information
Flowering occurs in early to midsummer, mainly June to July, when the cylindrical flower spikes open from the base upward over two to three weeks. The flowers release a strong, sweet scent that intensifies toward evening. After flowering the plants set dust-like seed and die back to their underground tubers.

Plants grow in full sun to light shade in moist but free-draining, low-fertility soils, and most species prefer neutral to lime-rich ground. They depend on symbiotic fungi and undisturbed soil, which makes them slow to establish and difficult to transplant or cultivate. Even moisture through spring and early summer suits them, followed by a drier dormant period after the leaves die back. They are propagated mainly from seed sown with the right fungal partner, as division is rarely successful. Most species are frost-hardy, surviving cold winters as dormant tubers. Rich, fertilised, or disturbed soils cause decline.Pruning
