Glossodia major
waxlip orchid
Overview
Glossodia major, the waxlip orchid, is a small tuberous terrestrial orchid native to the woodlands of southeastern Australia. Each plant grows from an underground tuber and produces a single hairy, lance-shaped leaf 2-5 inches (5-13 cm) long that lies near the ground. From this rises a slender stem 4-10 inches (10-25 cm) tall bearing one, or occasionally two, flowers in spring. The blooms are 1-1.5 inches (2.5-4 cm) across, mauve to deep violet, rarely white, with a small white-and-yellow waxy lip at the center that gives the plant its common name. The flowers produce no nectar and rely on deceiving native bees into visiting for pollination. After flowering the plant dies back to its tuber and rests dormant through the dry summer. G. major grows in dry eucalypt forest, woodland, and heath on sandy, well-drained acidic soils, often appearing in numbers after fire. Like most terrestrial orchids it depends on specific soil fungi and does not adapt to ordinary cultivation, so plants are difficult to transplant or raise in the garden.
Native Range
Native to southeastern Australia, including Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, and South Australia. It grows in dry sclerophyll forest, woodland, and heathland on sandy, well-drained soils.Suggested Uses
Grown mainly in native orchid collections, bushland restoration, and conservation plantings within its range. It adds spring color to woodland and heath gardens where soil fungi are present. It is grown by native-plant enthusiasts rather than as a general garden plant. How to Identify

Bloom Information
Flowering occurs in spring, from August to November in its native range, and is often heaviest in the season after a bushfire. Each plant opens one or occasionally two flowers that last one to two weeks. Native bees are the main pollinators, drawn in without a nectar reward.
