Overview
Eurhynchium spp. is a genus of pleurocarpous mosses in the family Brachytheciaceae, widespread through temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere and beyond. Plants form loose to dense creeping mats of slender, irregularly to pinnately branched stems that spread horizontally across soil, rock, tree bases, rotting wood, and leaf litter. Individual shoots are 0.4-2 inches (1-5 cm) long, clothed in small egg-shaped to triangular leaves 1-3 mm long that taper to a slender point and bear a single midrib. The foliage is green to yellow-green and stays green through the year. Like all mosses, the genus has no true roots, flowers, or seeds; it anchors by thread-like rhizoids and reproduces by spores released from capsules. The spore capsules are raised on reddish stalks 0.4-1 inch (1-2.5 cm) tall and are cylindric, curved, and inclined, ripening mostly in autumn and winter. Species grow in shaded, humid places and dry to a dull, shrivelled state in drought, reviving when moisture returns. The genus has been split taxonomically, and several former members are now placed in related genera such as Kindbergia spp. and Oxyrrhynchium spp..
Native Range
Eurhynchium spp. is widely distributed across the temperate Northern Hemisphere, including Europe, Asia, and North America, with representatives in parts of the Southern Hemisphere, growing in woodlands, grasslands, and shaded rocky places.Suggested Uses
Grown in shade and woodland gardens, on rocks and logs in damp settings, and in moss gardens and terrariums. Mats stabilise the surface of shaded soil and bind to stone and bark. The low creeping habit suits ground-level cover where taller plants grow poorly in dense shade. How to Identify

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Grow in shade to part shade in a consistently moist, humid position on soil, rock, bark, or rotting wood. The genus needs no conventional soil and draws moisture and nutrients directly through its surface, so it benefits from soft, low-mineral water and regular misting in cultivation. A substrate pH from about 5.0 to 7.5 suits most species. Mats dry and shrivel in drought and revive when rewetted, but prolonged dry heat kills them. Deep, undisturbed shade with steady humidity gives the most consistent growth. Fallen leaves are cleared from the surface to prevent smothering.Pruning
No pruning is required. Mats are lifted and divided to propagate or to patch bare ground, pressing fragments onto a moist surface to re-root. Overlying leaf litter is removed so light reaches the shoots.Container Growing
