Overview

Eriochilus spp. is a genus of small terrestrial orchids endemic to Australia, with about ten species known commonly as autumn orchids or parson's bands. They grow from underground tubers, sending up a slender stem 4 to 12 in (10 to 30 cm) tall with usually a single rounded basal leaf. The flowers are small and white to pink, with narrow upswept petals and sepals and a short hairy labellum, giving the parson's bands name; one to several open per stem. Most species flower in autumn, often before or as the single leaf fully develops, unlike many local orchids that flower in spring. Eriochilus spp. grows in well-drained sandy soils of open forest, woodland, and heath, and like other Australian terrestrial orchids depends on a partnership with soil fungi to grow from seed. The plants are dormant as tubers through the dry season and reappear with autumn rains. They are seldom cultivated outside specialist collections, as their fungal needs and seasonal cycle make them difficult to establish in gardens.

Native Range

Endemic to Australia, occurring across the southern and eastern states including Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales, and Tasmania. Eriochilus spp. grows in well-drained sandy and gravelly soils of open eucalypt forest, woodland, and heath.

Suggested Uses

Eriochilus spp. species are grown mainly by terrestrial orchid specialists and in native plant collections, and are valued for autumn bloom in their natural range. In habitat they support native bee and insect pollinators. They suit pots of free-draining mix or undisturbed native ground where their seasonal cycle can be matched.

How to Identify

A slender autumn-flowering terrestrial orchid with a single rounded basal leaf and small white to pink flowers. Each bloom has narrow, upswept lateral sepals and a short, hairy central labellum, the parson''s bands form. Autumn flowering, often while the leaf is still expanding, separates Eriochilus spp. from the mostly spring-flowering ground orchids around it.

Eriochilus spp. species grow in well-drained sandy or gravelly soil in open, lightly shaded woodland and heath. They are tuberous geophytes, dormant through the dry summer and growing through the cooler, wetter months. Like most Australian terrestrial orchids, they rely on specific soil fungi to germinate and grow, which makes them hard to raise from seed. Established tubers need a dry summer rest and renewed moisture in autumn. Acidic soils around pH 5.0 to 6.5 suit them. They are sensitive to disturbance, fertiliser, and waterlogging, and are mostly grown by specialist orchid growers rather than in general gardens.

Pruning

No pruning is needed for these small tuberous orchids. Spent flower stems and the withering leaf are left to die back so the tuber can build reserves. The dormant tuber is kept dry through summer until autumn growth resumes.
