Overview
Entodon spp. is a genus of roughly 40 to 160 pleurocarpous mosses in the family Entodontaceae, distributed across temperate and tropical regions worldwide. The slender stems creep over their substrate and branch freely, forming glossy mats of flattened, overlapping shoots 0.4-2 inches (1-5 cm) high. The small, concave leaves are smooth-edged and lie in a complanate (flattened) arrangement that gives the shoots a braided, shining look in yellow-green to golden tones. Spore capsules are narrowly cylindrical and held upright on slender red-brown stalks (setae) 0.4-1 inch (1-2.5 cm) tall. Most species grow on rotting logs, tree bases, humus, and shaded rock in forests, where they help stabilize thin organic surfaces. Entodon spp. requires steady moisture and shade and shrivels during dry spells, reviving when rewetted. As non-vascular plants, these mosses have no true roots or flowers and take up water directly through their surfaces. Species are told apart chiefly by microscopic leaf and capsule characters.
Native Range
Entodon spp. is cosmopolitan, growing in forests across temperate and tropical North and South America, Eurasia, Africa, and Asia, with many species in eastern North America and East Asia.Suggested Uses
Used in terrariums, vivariums, shaded rock and bonsai plantings, and moss gardens as a low, mat-forming groundcover over wood and stone. Patches are pressed onto moist substrate 2-4 inches (5-10 cm) apart and knit together over time. The glossy mats add a low green texture in shaded settings. How to Identify

Bloom Information
Mosses in this genus do not flower. They reproduce by spores formed in upright cylindrical capsules that ripen mainly from autumn through spring, and they also spread vegetatively as fragments root into new mats. Spore release depends on alternating moist and dry conditions.

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Grow Entodon spp. in shade to part shade on moist, organic substrates such as decaying wood, humus, or shaded rock, with a slightly acidic to neutral surface. The mats need steady ambient moisture and mist readily in cultivation; they brown and curl when dry but recover once rewetted. No soil cultivation or fertilizer is involved, as the plants take up water and nutrients through their surfaces. Gentle air movement without harsh drying wind keeps mats healthy in terrariums and shaded gardens. Established mats spread slowly over their substrate. Compacted foot traffic and prolonged drought are the main causes of loss.Pruning
No pruning is required. Overgrown or damaged sections of the mat are lifted away by hand, and detached fragments can be pressed onto fresh substrate to start new growth. Accumulated leaf litter is brushed off to keep the surface exposed.Container Growing
