Overview

Diodia spp. is a genus of low, sprawling herbs in the family Rubiaceae, native mainly to warm-temperate and tropical regions of the Americas. Plants are prostrate to weakly ascending, with square, often hairy stems 8-32 inches (20-80 cm) long that root at the lower nodes to form mats. The opposite leaves are narrow to lance-shaped, 0.6-2.4 inches (1.5-6 cm) long, joined across the stem by a fringed membranous sheath (stipule) typical of the family. Small tubular four-lobed flowers, white to pale pink or lilac, sit singly or in small clusters in the leaf axils through summer and into autumn. D. virginiana (Virginia buttonweed) is a mat-forming perennial of wet ground, while D. teres (poorjoe) is a slimmer summer annual of dry sandy soils. The dry ribbed fruit splits into two one-seeded segments. Both common species behave as persistent weeds of lawns, turf, and cultivated land, the perennial regrowing readily from stem and root fragments.

Native Range

Diodia spp. is native to the Americas, with its main range across the southeastern United States, Mexico, Central America, and tropical South America. The widespread species reach north into the warmer parts of the eastern United States.

Suggested Uses

Rarely cultivated by choice; Diodia spp. appears mainly as a volunteer in lawns, turf, pasture, and disturbed ground. D. virginiana occasionally colonises pond and ditch margins where its mats bind moist soil.

How to Identify

Recognised by square stems lying flat along the ground, paired narrow leaves joined by a bristly stipular sheath, and small white to pale lilac four-lobed tubular flowers tucked in the leaf axils. The dry fruit breaks into two ribbed one-seeded halves. Mat-forming growth rooting at the nodes separates the perennial D. virginiana from the more upright, single-stemmed annual D. teres.

Plants withstand mowing, foot traffic, and drought, regrowing from nodes and roots. Growth is fastest in warm, moist conditions, and the perennial species spreads quickly across thin turf. In garden settings the mats compete with low plantings and are slow to clear once rooted. Little care is needed for the plants themselves; management instead focuses on limiting spread.

Pruning
