Dendromecon rigida
bush poppy
California and Baja California (chaparral and foothills)
Overview
Dendromecon rigida is an evergreen shrub in the poppy family, forming a rounded to upright mound 3-8 feet (0.9-2.4 m) tall and nearly as wide, occasionally taller on old plants. The rigid, leathery leaves are lance-shaped, 1-3.5 inches (2.5-9 cm) long, and gray-green to blue-green with a rough, sandpapery surface that limits water loss. Bright yellow four-petaled flowers, 1-2.5 inches (2.5-6 cm) across, resemble those of a poppy and appear singly at the branch tips. The main bloom runs from spring into summer, with scattered flowers at other times of year. Slender curved seed capsules 2-4 inches (5-10 cm) long follow, splitting to release seeds that germinate strongly after wildfire. Native to the chaparral and foothill slopes of California and Baja California, it grows on dry, rocky, often disturbed ground. The species is short-lived, typically persisting 5 to 10 years, and is intolerant of root disturbance, summer irrigation, and heavy clay, which makes it hard to establish in gardens. Once settled on a sharply drained slope it needs no summer water and tolerates heat, drought, and lean soils.
Native Range
Dendromecon rigida is native to California and Baja California, where it grows in chaparral, coastal scrub, and dry foothill woodland below about 6,000 feet (1,800 m). It favors rocky, well-drained slopes and is often among the first shrubs to return after fire.Suggested Uses
Dendromecon rigida is used in dry native gardens, on hot banks and slopes, and in fire-recovery and chaparral restoration plantings. It suits rock gardens and unwatered borders where drainage is sharp. How to Identify

Bloom Information
The main flowering period extends from April to July, with scattered blooms appearing in other months when conditions allow. Each flower lasts a few days, and a plant in full bloom carries dozens of yellow flowers across its canopy. Seed capsules ripen through summer.

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Plant Dendromecon rigida in full sun and fast-draining, rocky or sandy soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH of about 6.5 to 8.0. It needs no summer water once established and is intolerant of clay, standing moisture, and root disturbance. Set out young container plants in fall and water only enough to settle them through the first dry season. The shrub withstands heat, drought, and lean soils but is short-lived, often declining after 5 to 10 years. Light shearing after bloom keeps the canopy denser, while cuts into bare old wood regrow slowly.Pruning
Prune lightly after the main bloom to shorten leggy stems and hold a compact form. Cuts into bare old wood regrow slowly or not at all, so pruning stays within leafy growth. Older plants are usually replaced rather than rejuvenated.Pruning Schedule
