Overview

Ctenidium spp. is a genus of pleurocarpous mosses in the family Hypnaceae, found on rock, soil, tree bases, and leaf litter across temperate and montane regions worldwide. The plants form soft, feathery, often glossy mats in shades of green, yellow-green, and gold, with creeping main stems and regularly comb-like rows of side branches. The small leaves are narrow and curved, tapering to long points and turned to one side, which gives the shoots a neat plaited look. Ctenidium molluscum, the comb moss, is a widespread species of limestone rock, calcareous grassland, and woodland in Europe. The genus favours humid, sheltered, often base-rich sites, from shaded boulders and walls to the floor of damp woodland. Like other mosses it has no roots and takes up water across its surface, drying and reviving with the weather. It forms part of the ground and rock flora of many habitats, binding thin soil and holding moisture. Several species are sensitive to disturbance and to drying, and they thin out where humidity is lost.

In moss gardens and shaded stonework it is sometimes left or encouraged for its feathery green to golden mats. Ecologically it binds thin soil, holds moisture, and shelters small invertebrates.

Ctenidium spp. is a wild moss rather than a cultivated plant and grows where humidity, shade, and a stable surface allow. Many species favour base-rich or limestone substrates, from rock and walls to thin woodland soil. The moss draws its water from rain, dew, and humid air, curling when dry and reviving when wetted. It tolerates the natural drying of exposed rock but thins where humidity falls or where it is trampled and disturbed. Because it has no roots, it takes nothing from the surfaces it grows on and simply anchors to them. In gardens it appears on its own on shaded stone, paving, and bank surfaces rather than being deliberately planted.

Pruning

As a wild moss, Ctenidium spp. is not pruned. Where it is left in place it needs no management beyond keeping its humid, shaded conditions. Mats can be lifted by hand from paving or stone if their spread is unwanted.
