Cryptostylis leptochila
small tongue-orchid
Overview
Cryptostylis leptochila is an evergreen terrestrial orchid forming a small cluster of upright leaves and a flowering spike 12-24 inches (30-60 cm) tall. The leaves are lance-shaped, 2-5 inches (5-13 cm) long, dark green above and often purplish beneath, held erect on slender stalks. Each spike carries 2-12 flowers that open in succession. The flowers are dominated by a narrow, erect labellum (the tongue) 0.8-1.2 inches (20-30 mm) long, dark reddish-brown with darker markings, while the remaining floral parts are small, greenish, and curve backward. Flowering occurs mainly in summer. The flowers are pollinated by male orchid-dupe wasps (Lissopimpla excelsa), which attempt to mate with the labellum and transfer pollen in the process; no nectar reward is produced. The plant grows from fleshy roots and spreads slowly to form small groups. Like most terrestrial orchids it depends on specific soil fungi (mycorrhiza), which makes transplanting and cultivation difficult. Dry conditions and soil disturbance reduce flowering and can cause plants to stay dormant below ground for a season.
Native Range
Native to eastern Australia, from Queensland through New South Wales to Victoria and Tasmania. Grows in open forest and woodland in well-drained sandy and loamy soils, often among leaf litter in dappled shade.Suggested Uses
Grown only in specialised native orchid collections and undisturbed bushland settings rather than general garden beds. Retained in conservation and revegetation areas for its role in native ecosystems. Not suited to containers because of its fungal soil requirement. How to Identify
