Overview

Calyptocarpus spp. is a genus of low, spreading perennial herbs in the daisy family (Asteraceae), native to the southern United States, Mexico, and Central America. The common species C. vialis, called straggler daisy or horseherb, forms a flat, trailing mat 4-12 inches (10-30 cm) high, with slender, branching stems that root at the nodes and small, oval, toothed leaves 0.5-1.5 inches (1-4 cm) long. Tiny yellow daisy flowerheads about 0.25 inch (6 mm) wide appear singly along the stems through much of the warm season. Plants spread by rooting stems and by seed and can knit into a dense groundcover, but the same vigour lets them creep into beds and lawns, where they are sometimes treated as a weed. Calyptocarpus spp. grows in sun or shade on a range of soils, tolerates light foot traffic, and stays green where moisture is steady, though it browns and thins in hard frost or prolonged drought.

Native Range

Calyptocarpus spp. is native to the southern United States from Texas and the Gulf states into Mexico and Central America. C. vialis grows in open woodland, lawns, roadsides, and disturbed ground, in sun or shade and on clay, loam, or sandy soils.

Calyptocarpus vialis is used as a low groundcover and lawn substitute for sun or shade, including dry shade under trees where turf grasses struggle. It suits naturalistic and low-water plantings in USDA zones 8-11. Its spreading habit makes it hard to keep out of nearby beds and conventional lawns.

How to Identify

Look for a low, trailing mat of slender stems that root where they touch soil, carrying pairs of small, oval, coarsely toothed leaves. Tiny five-rayed yellow daisy flowerheads sit singly in the leaf joints. The flat, node-rooting habit and small yellow heads separate Calyptocarpus spp. from other low lawn weeds and groundcovers.

Plants grow in full sun to full shade on most soils and need only moderate moisture, tolerating both dry shade and occasional foot traffic. They spread quickly by rooting stems, so they fill gaps fast but also creep into borders and turf.
