Overview
Callicladium imponens is a pleurocarpous moss in the family Hypnaceae that forms flat, glossy mats over decaying wood and the bases of trees. The slender stems creep horizontally and branch irregularly, clothed in small, overlapping, lance-shaped leaves about 0.04-0.08 inch (1-2 mm) long that taper to slender points and curve slightly to one side. The mats are golden-green to yellow-brown and take on a silky, brocade-like sheen when dry, the source of the common name. Like all mosses, it has no flowers, seeds, true roots, or internal vascular tissue; it anchors by thread-like rhizoids and absorbs water directly over its surface. It reproduces by spores formed in cylindrical capsules raised on reddish stalks (setae) that release spores in dry weather. C. imponens grows on rotting logs, stumps, and tree bases in moist, shaded forests across temperate North America and parts of eastern Asia. It depends on steady humidity and shade and dries to a dull, shriveled state during drought, reviving when moisture returns. Mats spread slowly across their woody substrate over years.
Native Range
Callicladium imponens grows across temperate North America, especially the eastern and northern forests, and extends into parts of eastern Asia. It is found in moist, shaded woodland on decaying wood and tree bases.Suggested Uses
Callicladium imponens is grown in terrariums, vivariums, moss gardens, and shaded woodland features on logs and stumps. Its glossy green mats add ground- and log-level texture in damp shade. It also helps decompose dead wood and shelters small invertebrates in forest habitats. How to Identify
Appearance
Bloom Information
This moss does not flower. It reproduces by spores held in small cylindrical capsules on reddish stalks, which ripen and release spores mainly in late spring and summer. Spore release coincides with drier spells that help carry them on air currents.

Care Guide
Callicladium imponens needs constant shade, high humidity, and a moist, decaying-wood surface to grow on. It cannot root in ordinary soil and instead spreads across logs, stumps, and bark by creeping stems and rhizoids. Steady moisture from rain, fog, or seepage keeps the mats green and growing, while drought turns them dull and dormant until water returns. It tolerates deep shade and cool temperatures but declines in dry, sunny, or disturbed sites. In cultivation it is grown in terrariums, on shaded wood, and in moss gardens kept damp. Mineral fertilizer and direct sun damage the soft shoots.Pruning
No pruning is needed or practiced. Sections of the mat can be lifted and pressed onto new damp wood to start additional patches. Dead or buried portions break down naturally into the rotting substrate.Container Growing
