Overview
Acanthocereus tetragonus (cultivated dwarf form) is the fairy castle cactus, growing 12–36 inches (30–90 cm) indoors. Multiple thin columnar stems 0.5–1 inch (1.2–2.5 cm) in diameter of varying heights cluster together — the different stem heights create a silhouette of towers and turrets. The species name 'tetragonus' means 'four-angled,' referring to the ribbed stem cross-section. Growth rate is slow — the multi-stemmed cluster develops gradually over years as new stems emerge at different rates. Commercial specimens are frequently sold with artificial flowers hot-glued onto the stems — these are not real. Actual flowers (large white nocturnal blooms 4–6 inches / 10–15 cm) are extremely rare in the cultivated dwarf form and require the plant to reach substantial maturity. Check for hot glue at the base of any attached flowers. Full direct sun (5+ hours) for compact growth; insufficient light causes etiolation (thin, pale, stretching stems). Well-draining cactus soil. Water sparingly — once every 2–4 weeks during the growing season, nearly dry in winter. Non-toxic to cats and dogs. Native to southern North America, Central America, and the Caribbean. Susceptible to root rot if overwatered or kept in non-draining containers.
