Which plant is described by these clues? The genus name is the ancient Greek word for the bay laurel, the tree a river nymph was turned into to escape Apollo. Its twigs are so rich in tough, silky {bast} fibres that the bark peels away in stringy strips instead of snapping cleanly. Each flower lacks true {petals}: the slender scented tube and its four spreading lobes are built from coloured {sepals}. Its hybrid epithet is Latin for 'across the Atlantic'. Tucked inside the narrow flower tube are eight {stamens} arranged in two tiers, one ring above the other. It is a garden-made cross between a white-flowered shrub of the Caucasus Mountains and a pink-flowered Mediterranean hill species. It forms a compact, rounded, {semi-evergreen} mound about 2 to 3 feet (0.6 to 0.9 m) tall and a little wider. Its white, pink-blushed flower clusters release a sweet, powdery perfume in waves from spring until frost, far longer than the brief show of most of its relatives. Every part, the berries above all, carries the blistering irritant mezerein, so deer leave it alone and pets and children should too. This cream-edged selection is the repeat-blooming alternative to variegated 'Carol Mackie', a late-spring hybrid sharing one of its parents, and has a plain-green hybrid sibling sold as 'Eternal Fragrance'.
