The understory consists of shade-tolerant trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants growing beneath the forest canopy. This layer receives filtered sunlight and is generally cooler and more humid than the canopy. Understory plants are adapted to low light conditions and play important roles in forest ecology: providing wildlife habitat, preventing soil erosion, cycling nutrients, and contributing to vertical forest structure.
