🏷️ Taxonomy●●● Advanced

Also known as: thermale

A highly specific habitat epithet indicating the plant grows near thermal springs, hot springs, or geothermally warmed ground. Plants with this epithet are often relict species that survived glacial periods in the warm microhabitats of thermal areas. Appears as thermalis (both genders).

Etymology

From Latin thermalis, meaning "of warm springs," from thermae (warm baths, hot springs), from Greek therme (heat, warmth).

Example

Agrostis thermalis and Lepidium thermale both grow in the unusual microhabitats around thermal springs — warm, mineral-rich ground that allows plants to persist year-round in otherwise frigid alpine environments.

Example Plant
