Suffruticosus

/suf-froo-tih-KOH-sus/
🏷️ Taxonomy●●● Advanced

Also known as: suffruticosa, suffruticosum

A habit epithet for plants that are woody and persistent at the base but produce soft, herbaceous, often dying-back upper stems each year — intermediate between a true shrub (fruticosus) and a fully herbaceous perennial. Sub-shrubs are a particularly rich category in Mediterranean and alpine floras. Appears as suffruticosus (masculine), suffruticosa (feminine), or suffruticosum (neuter).

Etymology

From Latin sub- (somewhat, partially) + frutex/fruticis (shrub) + -osus (full of), meaning "somewhat shrubby."

Example

Penstemon suffruticosus and many lavenders, salvias, and artemisias share this sub-shrubby character — their woody base giving permanence while the soft annual growth provides the season's flowers.
