    Simplex

    /SIM-pleks/
    🏷️ Taxonomy Basic

A form epithet with two related meanings: either describing an unbranched stem, or distinguishing a single-flowered form from double-flowered relatives. In both cases it implies an uncomplicated, straightforward structure — simple rather than compound or elaborate. Appears as simplex (both genders).

    Etymology

From Latin simplex, meaning "simple," "single," or "without folds," from semel (once) + plicare (to fold).

    Example

Cimicifuga simplex (simple bugbane) has unbranched flower spikes in contrast to the branched C. racemosa, and Leucanthemum vulgare — the simple daisy — contrasts with double-flowered cultivars the simplex epithet distinguishes.

    Example Plant

    🌿Actaea simplex brunette
