    🏷️ Taxonomy●● Intermediate

    Also known as: serotina, serotinum

A phenological epithet indicating the plant comes into leaf, flower, or fruit later than other members of its genus or than the season would suggest. Late-flowering plants are particularly valuable in extending the garden season into autumn. Appears as serotinus (masculine), serotina (feminine), or serotinum (neuter).

    Etymology

From Latin serotinus, meaning "coming late," "late in the day," or "of late season," from serus (late).

    Example

Prunus serotina (black cherry) leafs and flowers later than most cherries, and Lonicera periclymenum 'Serotina' (late Dutch honeysuckle) prolongs the flowering season well into autumn.
