Also known as: streamside, riverbank
The zone of vegetation along waterways that provides critical ecosystem services: bank stabilization, water filtration, shade (reducing water temperature), habitat corridors, and flood attenuation. Riparian buffers of native trees and shrubs are a key conservation and water quality practice.
Etymology
Latin riparius (of a riverbank), from ripa (bank)
Example
“A 50-foot riparian buffer of native trees along the stream filters runoff and stabilizes the banks.”
