    Radicans

    /RAD-ih-kanz/
    🏷️ Taxonomy●● Intermediate

A morphological epithet describing a plant that puts out roots along its stems — typically aerial roots that anchor and absorb from the surface they climb, or roots at stem nodes where they touch the ground. Plants with this epithet can cling to walls without support and spread by rooting as they grow. From the present participle of the Latin verb to take root.

    Etymology

From Latin radicans, present participle of radicare, meaning "to take root," from radix/radicis (root).

    Example

Hedera helix (ivy) is one of the most familiar self-clinging climbers, and Campsis radicans (trumpet vine) sends out aerial rootlets that grip any surface the plant touches.
