/foh-toh-SIN-thuh-sis/
🦋 Ecology Basic

The fundamental biochemical process by which plants and other photosynthetic organisms use light energy to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose and oxygen. Occurs primarily in chloroplasts within leaf cells. The basis of nearly all food chains on Earth.

Etymology

From Greek photos (light) + synthesis (putting together).

Example

The green color of leaves comes from chlorophyll, the pigment essential for photosynthesis.
