Microclimate
/MY-kroh-KLY-mit/🦋 Ecology● Basic
A microclimate is the set of atmospheric conditions (temperature, humidity, light, wind) in a localized area that differs from the broader climate. Gardens create many microclimates: south-facing walls radiate warmth, dense hedges block wind, water features moderate temperature, and tree canopies create cool shade. Understanding microclimates allows gardeners to grow plants outside their typical hardiness zone.
Etymology
From Greek mikros (small) + Greek klima (slope, zone)
Example
“The south-facing brick wall created a warm microclimate perfect for the marginally hardy fig tree.”
