Also known as: melanophylla, melanophyllum

A Greek-derived compound epithet describing a plant with very dark — almost black — leaf coloration. The darkest of the leaf color epithets, it marks plants whose foliage absorbs nearly all visible light. Appears as melanophyllus (masculine), melanophylla (feminine), or melanophyllum (neuter).

Etymology

From Greek melanos (black, dark) + phyllon (leaf), meaning "dark-leaved."

Example

Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Nigrescens' (black mondo grass) and Colocasia esculenta 'Black Magic' approach the near-black foliage this epithet describes — plants that create voids of darkness in a planting, drawing the eye through contrast.

Example Plant

🌿Acer melanophyllum
