Erythrocarpus
/eh-rith-roh-KAR-pus/🏷️ Taxonomy●●● Advanced
Also known as: erythrocarpa, erythrocarpum
A compound epithet specifying that the plant bears red fruit or berries — combining the Greek for red with the Greek for fruit. Like leucanthus for white flowers, it is more precise than the plain color epithet rubra in specifying that it is the fruit rather than other organs that is red. Appears as erythrocarpus (masculine), erythrocarpa (feminine), or erythrocarpum (neuter).
Etymology
From Greek erythros (red) + karpos (fruit), meaning "red-fruited."
Example
“Sorbus erythrocarpa and Cotoneaster erythrocarpus both produce the bright red berries that give birds their autumn feast and give these plants their instantly descriptive epithet.”
