Asplenium

🏷️ Taxonomy Basic

From Latin asplenon (spleenwort), adapted from Ancient Greek ásplēnon (ἄσπληνον), a classical name for these ferns formed from a- ("without") + splēn ("spleen"). Under the doctrine of signatures the spleen-shaped sori on the frond undersides were read as a sign the plants could remedy spleen ailments, which also gives rise to the common name spleenwort.
