Aspidistra is a genus of rhizomatous, evergreen understory perennials native to eastern and southeastern Asia, best known for the cast iron plant. Their leathery leaves rise singly from a creeping rhizome, and their fleshy, cup-shaped flowers open at soil level.
Etymology
From the Latinized Greek aspidion, "a small round shield," alluding to the flat, shield- or disc-shaped stigma at the centre of the flower.
