Asper

/AS-per/
🏷️ Taxonomy●● Intermediate

Also known as: aspera, asperum

A texture epithet indicating the plant surface is rough or harsh to the touch — caused by short, stiff, raised hairs, papillae, or surface irregularities. Less aggressive than hirsutus (coarsely hairy) but more than glaber (smooth). Appears as asper (masculine), aspera (feminine), or asperum (neuter).

Etymology

From Latin asper, meaning "rough," "harsh," or "rugged."

Example

Galium aparine (cleavers) and Asperula (woodruff genus — named from this root) both have the characteristic rough, hook-covered stems that catch on clothing and animal fur.
