Appendiculatus
/ap-pen-dik-yoo-LAY-tus/Also known as: appendiculata, appendiculatum
Appendiculatus describes a plant part that carries small appendages — minor outgrowths attached to a larger structure. What counts as an appendage varies with the plant: a scale or flap on a petal, a small lobe where a leaf meets its stalk, a fringe hanging from the rim of a cup, or little projections along a stem. The epithet is a note about ornament and fine detail rather than about overall shape, so it usually rewards a hand lens rather than a glance across the border.
Etymology
From Latin appendicula ("a small appendage, a small addition") + the ending -atus, which forms adjectives meaning "bearing" or "provided with".
Example
“You need a hand lens to see why it is called appendiculatus — the appendages are tiny flaps at the petal base.”
