Alnus

🏷️ Taxonomy Basic

Alnus is the classical Latin word for the alder, which Linnaeus adopted as the genus name for this group of wetland trees and shrubs. It descends through Proto-Italic *alznos from a Proto-Indo-European root, and the same ancient root gave English its word "alder." By extension the Romans also used alnus to mean a boat or vessel made of alder wood.
