Why do urban trees need specific soil volumes?

Urban trees face compacted soils and restricted root space. Without adequate soil volume, trees cannot develop the root mass needed to support their canopy, leading to stunted growth and premature decline.

What is structural soil?

Structural soil uses rigid cells or stone matrices to support pavement while providing uncompacted soil for root growth. Use it when trees are planted in paved areas like sidewalks or parking lots.

How do I know my tree's mature canopy spread?

Check species references, nursery tags, or forestry databases for the mature canopy spread. As a general guide: small trees 15–25 ft, medium trees 25–40 ft, and large shade trees 40–80 ft. Enter or choose that spread in the calculator; the optional species field is only a reference note and does not fill the canopy size.

How much soil does a medium shade tree need?

Using this calculator's rule (mature canopy area × a soil factor), a medium tree with a 30 ft canopy needs about 1,060 cubic feet (39 cubic yards) of uncompacted loam. In structural soil cells the factor rises from 1.5 to 2, about 1,410 cubic feet, because the cells take up part of the space.
