How many rolls of sod do I need?

Divide your lawn area (in square feet) by the size of each sod roll. Standard rolls cover about 2.67 sq ft (16" x 24"). Add a waste factor (typically 10%) to account for cutting and fitting. Our calculator handles all of this automatically.

How much does sod cost?

Sod prices vary by grass type and region. Generally, expect to pay $0.30-$0.90 per square foot for the sod itself. Bermuda and Tall Fescue tend to be more affordable, while Zoysia and St. Augustine are premium options. Installation adds $0.50-$1.00 per square foot.

How much waste should I plan for?

For simple rectangular areas, 5% waste is usually sufficient. For standard yards with some curves, 10% is recommended. Complex shapes with many obstacles may require 15-20% extra.

When is the best time to install sod?

Cool-season sod (bluegrass, fescue) is best installed in early fall or spring. Warm-season sod (bermuda, zoysia) should be installed in late spring to early summer. Avoid installing during extreme heat or freezing temperatures.

How do I prepare soil for sod?

Remove existing grass and weeds, grade the soil to slope away from buildings, add 2-3 inches of topsoil if needed, and rake smooth. The soil surface should be about 1 inch below sidewalks and driveways to allow for sod thickness.

How often should I water new sod?

Water new sod 2-3 times daily for the first week, keeping it consistently moist but not waterlogged. Reduce to once daily in week 2, then every other day in weeks 3-4. After the first month, transition to a normal deep watering schedule of 1-2 times per week.
