How much grass seed do I need per 1000 square feet?

It depends on the grass type. Kentucky Bluegrass needs 3 lbs/1000 sqft for new lawns, while Tall Fescue needs 8 lbs/1000 sqft. Overseeding rates are typically half the new lawn rate.

What is the difference between seeding and overseeding?

Seeding (new lawn) applies seed to bare soil at full rate. Overseeding applies seed over an existing lawn at a reduced rate to fill in thin spots and improve density. Overseeding typically uses about half the seed rate of a new lawn.

When is the best time to plant grass seed?

Cool-season grasses (bluegrass, fescue, rye) grow best when planted in fall (September-October). Warm-season grasses (bermuda, zoysia) should be planted in late spring (May-June) when soil temperatures are consistently warm.

How long does grass seed take to germinate?

Germination times vary by species: Perennial Ryegrass is fastest at 5-10 days, while Kentucky Bluegrass can take 14-30 days. Keep soil consistently moist during germination.

Can I mix different grass seed types?

Yes! Many lawn seed products are blends of multiple grass types. Mixing provides better disease resistance and adaptability. Choose our Cool-Season Mix or Warm-Season Mix options for pre-blended rates.

Why can't I use seed for St. Augustine grass?

St. Augustine grass is almost exclusively established from sod or plugs because its seed has very low germination rates and is extremely expensive. Use sod or plugs for St. Augustine lawns.

Should I use a seed spreader?

Yes, a broadcast or drop spreader ensures even seed distribution. For small areas, you can hand-spread. Divide the total seed amount in half and spread in two perpendicular passes for the most even coverage.

How do I prepare soil for grass seed?

Remove debris, loosen the top 2-3 inches of soil with a rake, level the surface, and ensure good seed-to-soil contact. A light topdressing of compost (1/4 inch) improves germination rates significantly.
